Here’s a very interesting English pine cupboard by the well-known makers Maple & Co. of London and Paris, dating from around the turn of the 20th century.

The cupboard features two drawers at the top, fitted with their original drop handles, above a pair of cupboard doors with gently arched panels. It has a wonderfully rustic appearance, with much of the character intentionally built into the design and construction from new, rather than simply being the result of age and wear.

Currently in an unrestored state, the cupboard would wax up beautifully while still retaining all of its original charm and character. The back is of typical Victorian construction and appears to have originally been painted.

Inside, there are removable shelves, and the interior is currently finished in an aged white paint with the usual marks and wear. The shelves could easily be repainted if desired, while the remainder of the interior is perfectly serviceable as it is. This offers the option of freshening up the inside while preserving the cupboard’s character.

A highly attractive and unusual piece with a recognised maker’s stamp and plenty of period appeal.
