Antique pine writing desk bureau.

This has been restored and waxed and is looking great. Sitting on original bun feet. The 3 large drawers below have brass drop handles and escutcheons (key plates). 6 of the internal drawers have porcelain knobs and the centre one opens with a key.

I think at one time in it’s life this would have had a top piece, maybe glazed, and would have been more of a Secretaire / dresser type of thing.

When the flap is lowered the surface measures 30″ from the floor (normal table height) so it is perfect to use as a writing desk. A very nice looking and functional piece of furniture.

This was made in East Germany. Circa 1900

This just needs a little cleaning up and re waxing. And I’ll remove the strange little stuck on stars that seem to be dotted around everywhere.

This table was made from reclaimed pine boards 15 to 20 years ago, and for the last 5 or 6 years used as a table tennis table. It is pretty flat but I’m sure they must have had dodgy bounces now and again.

I present it like this because some customers like me to paint it for them, some like me to wax it, and others like to wax it themselves. You will see that I have 2 prices for each piece of furniture, lower price for current condition, and a price for when the piece is restored and waxed. Also I can paint it for you (please ask for details).

Our old pine furniture is ideal for wax finishing or painting.

As you can see, most of our antique pine furniture is currently in the bare wood (stripped) and can be purchased as it is.
We show 2 prices for all of our furniture… The first is the buy it ‘in the bare wood’ price, and the second is for the item polished.

Below are some instructions on wax finishing of our furniture so you can take advantage of our ‘stripped antique pine furniture’ prices.

First job is to lightly sand (with the grain) the piece you are working on. It is usually best to use a fairly fine sandpaper, and rapping the sandpaper over a sanding block/pad will save your hands from splinters.

Next brush off the dust.

Use a brush, or wire wool to apply the wax (we use Briwax which is available in many different colours) Brush with the grain, and make sure all brush marks are brushed out.

When the wax is dry (about 15 mins or so) buff up using a buffing brush to produce a sheen.

Improved shine and durability can be achieved by first sealing the surface with Briwax Sanding Sealer.

The Briwax finish can be maintained by further applications which will give increased hardness and shine.

Briwax is not recommended for use in areas where it will come into contact with water, but other products are available for such applications.

Victorian, and in need of some work.

Firstly I’ll strip all the old wax off the outside.

Next remove the old paint from the inside where it hasn’t been stripped properly in the past.

There is a piece missing on the left top corner which needs looking at.

And then I’ll give it a good clean and wax and see how it looks.

A few years ago I recorded a short video of me putting such a wardrobe together. The lighting wasn’t very good but you’ll get an idea of how simple this process is:

A typical ‘Knock Down Wardrobe’ consists of a base, top, 2 sides, 2 doors and usually 3 or so back pieces. Also the fixing pieces.

A brief details of construction:

Place the base of the wardrobe close to your chosen position. (It can moved into exact position when assembled)
slot one side piece into the base and fix using the fixing provided. (These may consist of wedges or bolts)
Then slot in the back pieces starting from the fitted side piece.
Then fit the other side piece in position and attach using another fixing.
The top can now be placed on. (It’s usually best to do this with 2 people)

If the doors have locating pins, and do not have slide-on hinges they must be fitted before the top is secured. Angle the appropriate door so the bottom pine locates into the hole, and then tilt forwards so the top pin is close to the top hole. Lift the top of the wardrobe very slightly so you are able to position door top pin under locating hole. Lower top of wardrobe into position. Then you must fix that side of the wardrobe top using the fixing provided. When this is done you can go through the same process to fit the other door.

If the doors have external hinges use the fixings provided to secure the top on the wardrobe. Then simply drop the doors onto their hinges.

After the wardrobe has been constructed it can be moved into its final position. Try and slide by pushing on the base of the wardrobe and not at the top.

If you find the doors don’t close exactly and rub a little, this probably means your floor is not level. By lifting one corner of the wardrobe slightly you will discover which corner needs to be elevated using a thin piece of card or similar.

It is advisable to check the fixings after a couple of days when everything has settled.
